Menopause, its accompanying symptoms, and how to deal with them are a well-known part of a woman’s life. But what about andropause, the male equivalent of menopause? Even those who have heard of the condition also known as “male menopause” are not necessarily familiar with its causes, symptoms, or treatments. And part of the reason why is that not all men go through andropause. The symptoms, however, can be similar to menopause symptoms in women. Warning signs of andropause can include mood swings, a decline in libido, weight gain, fatigue, and erectile dysfunction, among others. And just like menopause, the symptoms are caused by a decline in hormones—in the case of andropause, by a decline in testosterone. Andropause symptoms can be managed in a number of ways, with the main goal being to balance the declining levels of testosterone, which can decrease symptoms and improve overall health while lowering risk of disease.
